The Cinque Terre’s Most Exhilarating Natural Experience

Hiking the Cinque Terre’s trails is one of the most exhilarating natural experiences you can enjoy on the Mediterranean. Here, on the trail between Corniglia and Vernazza, I marvel at the views while fantasizing about the meal I’ll enjoy when I get into Vernazza.

  1. We were there in 2010. Had 4 days and five nights. It was fantasticly relaxing and fun. Gorgeous views and sunsets, friendly folks, nothing to do but wander and relax. We stayed in Town #2 to the top by the church in the top room. Amazing. Can`t wait to go back. The rest of Italy is great too!

  2. The national park trail along the coast is good but it can be crowded and hot. Plan on taking a break or two if you hike (really just hilly walking) the whole thing. Vernazza is not my choice for lodging. Lots of seasonal landlords with marginal accommodations. Avoid anyplace within 100 yards of the rail station.

  3. I`m really enjoying these little clips. It feels like we get an inside look into Rick`s simple joys of travel. Keep them coming.

  4. Rick, I enjoyed the short clip on hiking the Cinque Terre trails, as I`ll be returning there in the Fall. I`m very much looking forward to the experience, and hoping that I can improve on my previous time. There`s no way I`ll be starting at 07:00 though!

  5. Enjoy the short clips (along with all your DVDs). Was a little concerned you might fall off, though. :)

  6. In 2008 we stayed in Monterroso, and hiked to the next town. I would have to look back on my trip to see exactly what town we ended up in. It was the hardest hike I have ever taken in my life. But I look back on the pictures from up above and have never seen anything as beautiful. What made it hard was the walking was like climbing up and down steps for hours.

  7. Judy, about how long was your hike (in distance and time)? I`m just curious because it sounds like a great way to really get a feel for an area, to just be pounding the pavement for mile after mile, your eyeballs filled with so many images, your hands touching the plants, rocks, signposts, etc.

  8. Brenda and I did the trek over 2 days in July 2010. If you are fortunate to be able to spend 3 to 4 days in Cinque Terre, please find the time to hike at least part of the beautiful scenic trail route. Take and drink lots of water, dehydration will sneak up on you if you don`t. Enjoy, Bruce.

  9. This wonderful–I just took the exact same hike (Corniglia to Vernazza) on Easter Sunday! (Of course, it was because I`d read RS`s recommendation in his Italy 2011 guidebook.) So great to see this video. It`s a gorgeous hike

  10. The hike that we took from Monterroso took us about 4 hours, we left in the morning and got to the next town for lunch. Then we road the train to the town that has the Lovers walk and walked that. We are in good shape and exercise but by no means are we regular hikers. It was the most beautiful views and we have a million pictures to remember it by. It seemed a lot harder than the Italy 2008 guide book described.

  11. Thanks Judy! Sounds hard but satisfying. I guess the key (for me) would be to make sure I have great shoes for hiking, because that only adds to the normal wear and tear your feet take while on an active vacation.
