Rain on the Rhine

It’s been a rainy summer in Europe. I remember summers when I brought a jacket and sweater…and only wore them on the chilly, air-conditioned flight home. Not this year.

We’ve made nine new TV shows this year (that’s a record for us) and have been dogged by rain during several shoots. The shows end up fine, but it takes every waking minute to get things as bright and perky as possible.

When I’m not filming, I hardly care about the weather. As you’ll see in this video clip, while I was researching my Germany guidebook, the rain actually put me in an almost giddy mood. Join me on the Rhine River in my favorite little town of Bacharach one evening for a torrential rainstorm.

  1. Rick, I’m just like you when it comes to weather in europe. May 2010 I was hit with spring showers all throughout southern Germany and still loved every minute of it. Sure the outdoor beer gardens weren’t jam-packed but still it didn’t dim my enthusiasm of being surrounded by such a beautiful environment.

However, I do hope when I’m in Bacharach in September that it isn’t raining :)
I’ll also keep an eye out for that peep show!

  2. Oddly enough, our spring here in Germany was warm and dry. I’ve worn a jacket and sweater more times between June and August (it’s FINALLY going to warm up to 30 C this weekend!) than I did in April and May.

  3. That is one of my favorite towns. We stayed in St Gore and took the boat down the river, everyone has to do the Rhine in Germany. But this was back in Aug 2005 and it rained more than not in the 21 days through Germany Austria and Praque. I left California in Aug. and it was 90-100 and my mind did not want to believe Weather.com, so I packed for summer and had to go by pants and socks and shoes. Luckily we always take jackets no matter what. We had so much fun.

  4. Rick,

It sounds like the weather is about the same as last year. I was in Bacharach for several days in late June and early July, and one day a torrential downpour hit the area which extended north past Koblenz. It was so severe that both rail and roads were washed out north of Koblenz, preventing fans from attending a big World Cup event in Köln. I did have several sunny days, so didn’t mind the rain.

On my return to Bacharach in the late afternoon, emergency crews were working frantically to clean trees and mud off the streets. This was one of the scenes I encountered on my way back to the Hotel.

That’s a great town and I really enjoyed my stay there! Your recommendations for lodgings were perfect (I stayed at both Hotel Kranenturm and Pension Lettie on different days).

I’ll be looking forward to seeing those new shows!

  5. You can guess that Rick is from western Washington State where it drizzles more often than not. And I leave for Germany tomorrow (8/19) morning!
