Victor Emanuel Monument

The long-loathed Victor Emmanuel Monument has been cleaned up. I’ve never considered it this way, but a local guide tells me that this heavy, gaudy edifice, grandiose in its patriotism, offers a good sense of how Ancient Rome must have looked at its peak. And, now that it’s spiffed up — surrounded by delightful landscaping, welcoming visitors via a new elevator to its rooftop for the best view in Rome, and gleaming in its newly shiny, white complexion — suddenly, its poll numbers are rebounding.
