Hillary in Rome

As I was dining al fresco in Rome, just off Campo de’ Fiori, a helicopter droned overhead. A group of tall, trim men in black dress jackets wandered around listening to their earpieces. While I’d chatted with them (and left thinking, “Wow, no sense of humor”), I didn’t put things together. Turns out Hillary Clinton was eating dinner a block away, and they were scouting a little walkabout for her. An hour later, an energy swept across the square like a tiny urban tornado. The word spread: It’s Hillary Clinton. I jumped up from my plate and walked through her entourage to shake her hand. She works so hard, I just wanted to say thanks. She asked me what I was doing here. “We’re making a TV show for PBS, ” I told her. She said, “Let’s keep PBS alive.” Hooray for Hillary.

  1. Ok can`t resist the chance to poke a little fun. But really Hillary, “What are you doing here?” Add your own Rick response. IE: “I made a wrong turn on my way to Seattle.” Before you take me to task I`m sure she didn`t mean it that way. But I will say, I have to agree with her on PBS.

  2. What fun. I remember I was in Washington DC for a convention and was taking a group of sales people and an author to dinner at the Hungry Peasant near the White House the March after Bill Clinton was elected. All of a sudden we saw the same thing – solemn people with strange ear pieces. It turned out that Bill was taking Janet Reno out for dinner to convince her to join his cabinet. When the President arrived, our whole table just piled out of our seats and ran ran up to shake hands. I always laugh and remember the sales manager`s comment, “You have to shake my hand. I`m from Connecticut!” Of course he did, but to this sure why being from Connecticut made it imperative. ; ) Pam

  3. There is Hillary Clinton a well educated, hard working public servant and intelligent citizen-of-the-world. And then there is Palin who quit her job after being elected to a job in a state with a tiny tiny population – sort of captain of a row boat. But this blog is about Italy and I think it behooves all travelers with stars in their eyes to remember that on 27 May 2011 a tourist in Naples was murdered for his wrist watch.

  4. Lol great story Pam. Makes you wonder what a guy from Texas would get. Oh and how did Palin get into this?

  5. Why do bigwigs like Rick Steves and Hillary Clinton want to keep PBS alive? Because it`s a huge mouthpiece for the Left and the Liberal agenda, as is CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, and NPR. No wonder all of them relentlessly attack right-wing Fox News. Don`t worry America, real hope and change is coming in 2012. Starting in 2012, we`ll have a President who cares more about visiting tornado victims in the USA, and less about shmoozing with European Socialists who think he`s God while US citizens are picking up their belongings from their destroyed homes.

  6. I like my PBS station. I get great shows: travel, cooking, DIY, masterpiece theater, british shows like keeping up appearances, and classical performances in opera. When Charlie Rose comes on I just turn it.

  7. Wow! I can tell you really enjoyed that, Rick! I could feel the buzz of the place. Thanks for sharing.

  8. According to NPR, its average listener makes $86,000 per year. It`s probably about the same for PBS. If pubic broadcasting is so wonderful, why do its affluent viewers, listeners, and participants need taxpayer subsidies? Maybe Hillary can contribute the money she took from cattle futures.

  9. Thomas Elliot – The reason Pres. Obama didn`t immediately go to the tornado stricken areas is because the security and logistics needed for his visit would have taken attention and resources away from the victims. He had to wait for the situation to settle down. By the way, Obama is actually not very popular among the European leaders because he`s asking them to contribute more to dealing with global problems, instead of depending so much on the U.S. to come to the rescue. I would think a conservative would agree with him on that.
