A Lonely Train Ride to Rome

Riding the four-hour train from La Spezia to Rome was actually lonely. Paying extra to get away from crowds was entirely unnecessary. Thumbing through my Cinque Terre book, now filled with its changes for the 2012 edition, was like a celebration. I learned so much in four days in paradise, and it’s all massaged into the new edition.

  1. The empty compartments are just more evidence of the severe economic problems facing many in the E.U. In past years I had found train travel one way to make new friends and have great conversations.

  2. Some slow time is good to reflect. People time is also good. Variety is spice! I`m enjoying your travels in Italy.

  3. I said it on facebook, but I want to say it again. Thanks for the video blog Rick. I have followed your travel blogs and your guide books for years. I appreciate this new addition. Your information has served me well. Happy Travels to you and your crew!

  4. That is funny, in 2008 we took the same train to Rome, but I guess it was before the biggest part of the recession took place. We spent our 4 hours talking to middle age couples like us with their RS 2008 Italy book on their tray. We will be back over there in 3 weeks, wonder what it will be like this time?

  5. Really?!? The LAPTOP and HEADPHONES?!? Yes, the cars were mostly empty, but……I`m glad everything was where you left it! Oh, and please never do that `spinny thing` between cars again ;-)

  6. I`ll be in the CT in 4 weeks from today. I sure wish I knew what those deleted sections from the guidebook say, so I know what to avoid!

  7. Follow-up: If you stop the video, you can take the 2011 CT book and figure out some sections that are marked out. My copy is marked now, too.
