  1. With all due respect to Coca Cola, US hegemony and religion and money only stretch so far. I always admired my Japanese colleagues for being themselves even in the US. Their politeness always surpassed our own. On the other hand, I vividly remember young Japanese women tourists in New Zealand and Australia and Hawaii who were self-centered and rude. It’s best not to stereotype people and cultures.

  2. Speaking of Christmas Cake, the Japanese refer to an unmarried older women as ‘Christmas Cake’ (implying that she will never marry and that the cake is now stale). A politically incorrect Japanese ‘tradition’, to be sure.
