Marken has been on the tourist trail a long time. My great-grandfather took the family on the grand tour of Europe in 1902. My grandfather’s journal tells of the sail boat ride to Marken. At that time the locals wore traditional dress. My great-aunt, fourteen years old at the time, was embarrassed that the local teens laughed at the way she was dressed.
