Super Bowl Party with the Today Show

I just had the joy of hosting an NBC film crew in my living room to talk about marijuana while setting up for this Sunday’s Super Bowl party. Why? To share my ideas on the fact that the two states that legalized the responsible recreational and adult use of marijuana are the same two states with Super Bowl teams.

During the interview, I said, “The people of Washington State and Colorado are wonderful people. You could debate whether we’re smarter, healthier, more outdoorsy, happier, or more free than people from what I call ‘the lower 48.’ But there’s no doubt that the two states that legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults are the two states with the best football teams in the entire USA. And we’re about to see which of them is number one.”

The interview is scheduled to air this weekend on NBC’s Weekend Today Show. But you don’t need to tune in all weekend to watch it. I’ll post a link to the interview, once it’s available online.

  1. Its your hard earned billions to spend on what ever you want, but wow I wish you would spend more on education in this country or something worth while than pot. Like I said you make it and you can spend it, but I really don’t get it, for all the good you do in some areas why this?

  2. Thank you Rick for trying to unbrainwash the population that marijuana is evil and isn’t a substance that can be abused or used in moderation for enjoyment and medicinal benefit. The billions our government is spending on law enforcement and incarceration for marijuana could go a long way elsewhere, such as education. I don’t and won’t partake but think it ridiculous those who want to cannot.

  3. Your connection to legalized marijuana use and teams making it to the Super Bowl, I think is a bit of a stretch.
After all, I do not see the Netherlands winning many World Cup championships.
When you made your super bowl/marijuana connection were you “high?”

  4. Each to its own and it’s pure speculation but it appears to me that Rick Steves is a product of: his generation; his location; his background and his evolution. And, for better or for worse, “birds of a feather.” He is possibly a product of the seventies, the west, liberal parents, plus European travel. Naturally Rick is going to cherry-pick his best experiences to promote – and maybe not in a purely objective way. And surrounding yourself with those who live in the moment possibly reinforces your life style and beliefs. But trying to export those beliefs, even if you are passionate about them, to others can be enlightening to the promoter. And even a hint of superiority or smugness about an issue can translate into a perception of arrogance. Rick seems likable so maybe he can get away with it with his followers. But I prefer the stance of his guides who eschew talking about their personal politics.

  5. As you have explored the world and have seen how various cultures adapt to issues such as the recreational use of marijuana, I respect your position and those who also advocate for it. If it is legal for people to drink responsibly, then, it is time to give marijuana the same path.

  6. I saw the segment on the Today Show and was pleased with the way you handled the topic. I’ve always been a fan and been proud that you’re from Washington State too – way to represent in an intelligent, factual manner!

  7. Amen Rick. With all of the food choices for Super Bowl Parties, i’m sure folks can use a little help with the muchies.

I knew i liked this guy.

  8. I was quite surprised on Sunday morning, when the camera panned and I’m thinking…”Wow, there’s Rick!!” I immediately hoped there would not be any negative feedback for you, the organization or diminishing support for Bread for the World from any viewers that were “offended.” Gary in Florida.
