Last month, the New York Times ran an article about hipster fashion trends that claimed sarcastically that “the Rick Steves look is next.” While I’m honored to be mentioned in any article discussing pop culture, I must respectfully disagree with the author. The Rick Steves look isn’t the NEXT hipster fashion trend–it is, in fact, the CURRENT fashion trend. While I generally lay low when it comes to making fashion statements, I believe these photos prove that I was the Original Hipster. Don’t you agree?
Children of the Sixties and Seventies, I’m sure you have similar photos of yourselves–whether hitchhiking through Europe or just hang out at home. Dig them up, and post them on my page. Let’s show the younger generation that they should have been listened to their parents’ fashion advice all along.
Groovy Travels!

You are too cool for school. I won’t post my pictures because they would be too risque-taken after drinking too much cheap wine!
Hilarious, and just a wee bit frightening. ;o)
When I read your views on pot, I knew you were a product of the 60’s and 70’s,
I see a wee bit of Nerdy in the mix. We are the same age and believe me I will never let my husband run around in shorts and black shock! Even when he is 80.
As I read tis blog, I looked down and i am wearing brown shorts and black socks! So you are not the only one!
Farm out and right arm!
Where’s the picture of ya high fiving old ladies way too hard.
and don’t forget,Let’s get our sheep together and get the flock out of here!! Love the shorts!!
Too much weed is causing the megalomania.
I am not sure if it is megalomania or a mid-life crisis. Either way, it happens to the best of us.
I think I spot a studded belt. Yep, you’re a hipster.
Is Rick picking through people’s discarded food in the first photo? And driving while wearing headphones and drinking? Times were indeed different back in the day…
2nd and 3rd pictures- was Mr. Steves a member of an ABBA tribute band?
The 70s were kind of rough on everybody. I know that fashion operates on a pendulum, but can we block the pendulum swing next time it approaches that awful extreme?
Two thoughts and neither have anything to do with your fearlessness in posting these shots. We are also about the same age and I have hazy memories of why I, too, was a fashion casualty. 1) We were in a b&b on Ireland’s west coast about 25 years ago, near the “awesomunal” music village of Doolin and they had a Christmas card from you on a cork board in their home, which we thought was just about the coolest thing and 2) Nadia, look at Rick’s courage in posting his pictures. Let’s see yours!
Oh, those shorts do rock!!! Let’s see Nadia’s pictures!
Thank you for posting these photos, Rick! You are the original hipster.
