Rick Steves: The Original Hipster

The New York Times recently ran an article about hipster fashion trends that claimed sarcastically that “the Rick Steves look is next.” While I’m honored to be mentioned in any article discussing pop culture, I must respectfully disagree with the author. The Rick Steves look isn’t the NEXT hipster fashion trend–it is, in fact, the CURRENT fashion trend. While I generally lay low when it comes to making fashion statements, I believe these photos prove that I was the Original Hipster. Don’t you agree?

Children of the Sixties and Seventies, I’m sure you have similar photos of yourselves–whether hitchhiking through Europe or just hanging out at home. Dig them up, and share them with me on Facebook. Let’s show the younger generation that they should have been listening to their parents’ fashion advice all along.

  1. Rick, I love you! These pictures are fantastic, as you are, indeed the original hipster! I’m 43, so is child of the 70’s and 80’s who grew up with hipster turned prep parents. Over the years I’ve embraced all the styles, b/c one would be too boring ;) Anyway, my husband and I just returned from a week in France where we hit some of the spots you suggested. We always “consult” you on every trip we take! Now, am I going to lie? Do we ever affectionately talk about your iron-free wardrobe and zip-off pants? Every time we travel! BUT, please know, it’s always through a lens of love because you remind us so much of my husband’s dad who passed away too young, 17 years ago…he had those same zip-off pants…and at one time, when he had a folk rock band, he also sported a fedora and high-waisted bell bottoms! Much love and gratitude to you, Rick, for blazing trails for our family around the world! – The Graveswolds

  2. You were and still are cute! I met you and I have your pic with my son and daughter-in-law framed and hung in my bedroom! Your “cuteness” goes way inside you too!!!

  3. AND…i am looking closely at yer Casio watch Stevo. Hipsters have nothin on you! Bring it!<3

  4. Fads may come and go, but, Rick, you’re the patron saint of road warriors. You’ve made our bucket list doable.

  5. Definitely some great photos.

And the photo of you at the piano has that Moody Blues hair!

  6. You should bring back the mustache and beard look! You look so free spirited in those old pictures. Of course we all know you are free spirited at heart – facial hair or not – with all your travels!

  7. Rick, you look like Dana Carvey from the SNL Choppin’ Broccoli skit in that 2nd photo!
