Cesare, the coppersmith of the Tuscan hill town of Montepulciano, is a proud old artisan with a spirit as strong as the oak-tree root upon which his grandfather’s anvil sits. For Cesare, every day is show-and-tell, as steady streams of travelers with my Florence & Tuscany guidebook drop by to see him work, stroke his beautiful ego, and say hi. It is people-to-people moments like this that distinguish a good trip.

Hi,
I wonder how many more generations will use that wonderful workshop?
Ciao,

My husband, John, and I visited Cesare thanks to Rick Steves’ guidebook. That visit, along with a stop at Adamo’s nearby wine shop, also mentioned in Steves, were the highlights of our Tuscany/Umbria vacation. If you go to Montepulciano, do not miss these two charming men. Don’t worry if you are not able to speak Italian. Our Italian was spotty at best and somehow we were able to communicate and had a wonderful time in the process.
