John Knox, Mickey Mouse and a very big boy

Here’s a batch of photos shares a little of the fun I had in the last two months in Europe. I’ve also added a few photos to the last dozen or so blog entries you may enjoy reviewing.

At the John Knox House in Edinburgh a fun little dress up corner let me play out my Great Reformer fantasy.

  3. I am assuming that the girl in the picture with Ronald McDonald and Mickey is from that famous photo taken during the Vietnam War. It certainly got me thinking about it but what is the purpose of the three of them on a t-shirt? Have I missed something? And how many people (the original photographer excluded) have made money off of this poor girl’s misery?

  4. Maggie, sounds like you’re trying to pick a fight. The symbolism is fairly obvious, whether you agree with it or not.

  6. Maggie, I don’t think you’re trying to pick a fight, you just aren’t tuned in to the US=bad mind set of “edgy” thought. The shirt is linking US icons Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald with a horrible event that ocurred 40 years ago during the Viet Nam war. So the globalization of US culture is doing the same thing to the world at large that napalming villages did to that poor little girl 40 years ago in VietNam. Of course, the fact that commercial globalization is voluntary doesn’t matter. Because it is American, it is rude, gross and evil. I was in Paris earlier this year and saw the McDonalds near Versailles and Disneyland Paris crowded with Europeans voluntarily enjoying American food and entertainment. To link this to a napalmed little girl seems excessive to me, but I’m not an “edgy” or “thought provoking” t-shirt artist. So, JRod, leave Maggie alone. She’s not picking a fight. She just isn’t as down on the US as you are.

  7. Rick thanks for all the great pictures! I really enjoyed them. Istanbul looked great. We were there in September and it seemed like they had more air pollution. I don’t remember such a clear blue sky.

  9. Everything is thought provoking to someone. However, some things/images provoke thought very close to firmly held beliefs or deep old wounds. As a viet vet, I will always have to struggle with my belief that a military is necessary, but with also the knowledge that we were lied to…and still are being lied to. And because we didn’t know the truth, bad things were done to other human beings…and are still being done to other human beings. Profit is a strong force of motivation. Humans self-justify so perfectly, that we are capable of anything and still think we are the good guys. Life was very nice for me…very simple, I mean…when I could demonize anyone who was different than me or disagreed with me and what I thought my country stood for. Now, I just want to see corporate citizens with as much heart as my family, friends and neighbors. I want to be a part of those photos of a family on bikes or on a picnic. Unfortunately, I will also always be a part of that napalmed little girl photo.
