I’ve never been big on ballooning. It’s expensive, you need to get up really early, and I’m a little bit afraid of the whole thing. Ballooning is popular in France’s Loire Valley and in Egypt’s Luxor on the Nile, but it’s even more popular in Cappadocia in central Turkey. I ballooned for my first time here a year or so ago as I was scouting for our TV shoot. The experience was so majestic, I knew I’d be back with the crew.
Ballooning has had a tough 2013. First there was the tragedy in Luxor, Egypt, in February killing 19, and then on May 20 a balloon right here in Cappadocia collided into another one — killing two tourists. But hundreds go up every day throughout the season — as they have now for several decades. It’s a calculated risk people have to decide for themselves. Floating silently over the pinnacles of Cappadocia is truly a travel experience of a lifetime, and I wanted to share it on TV.
What’s your take on ballooning in your travels? Where is it best? Do you feel it’s safe?

I had some pre-flight jitters in May 2012 while on your Best of Turkey tour, but thoroughly enjoyed the ride over Cappadocia. It was an unforgettable experience. We had the same pilot, Mustafa, that you had. He was very competent with a great sense of humor. Brought us down on the back of a pickup truck, then served the champagne. Perfect way to start the day.
So tempting, but I haven’t even had the nerve to do the Napa Valley yet. I am sure it would not be a regrettable moment! Glad you got the nerve!
We also took a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia. It was on my “bucket list” and I was so glad we did it. There was a large group doing it so there were many balloons rising at the same time. It was magical!
Bruges is a great place for a balloon trip. Great variety in view…old town, farms, villages, etc. Skimmed over tree tops and corn fields. We happened to land in a market gardeners field and they gladly joined us for beer and champagne. Met them later that week at a market and bought some of their seeds to take home. A great experience and a trip highlight.
Maybe the “bucket” list should be relegated to the risk list.
Latest accident happened the day after we left Goreme. It’s a high risk thrill I’ll skip but happy for those who have enjoyed it.
Took rides in Luxor and Cappadocia. Cappadocia was superior. We had a 20yr experienced Aussie pilot who payed constant attention to ground, wind, air currents and the other 60 balloons. We felt very safe. Longer flight than in Luxor and left after sunrise so light for photos was much better. Our pilot took us up and down between the pinnacles many times rather than just rising and remaining at one altitude as we did in Luxor. If you only go ballooning once do it in Cappadocia
