Italian towns don’t look so cute by accident. These days you can’t just paint your house without dropping by the City Hall and seeing which pastel colors are allowed. Here in Vernazza, the choices are clear…and limited.

Thanks for the posting entitled, “Vernazza’s Permitted Pastels. Last Fall while visiting
Vernazza, I spent 6 hrs making a cityscape drawing of Vernazza in black ink. So I
wouldn’t forget the exact color combinations, I took a series of digital camera images
of the buildings down along the waterfront. As I began to paint the vibrant colors and
began to notice that each building’s color was different that the adjacent one, but that
the colors complemented each other for a total visual effect. As per your recent blog
I now can understand that color matching was by “design”. Thanks for the new
