Contest: Guess Rick’s Post-Cruise Weight for a Big Fat Prize

Everyone talks about the weight you gain living on a cruise ship. There’s free food and extremely tempting free deserts everywhere you turn at all hours of the day. They say the typical cruise passenger gains about a pound a day. My friends warned me that after two weeks at sea I’d put on “the seafaring 15.” Back in Barcelona, when I started this floating feast, I weighed in at 212 pounds. At Mykonos, after two weeks of cruise eating, I weighed myself again…nervous about the total.

When I started cruising, I weighed in at 212 pounds. Guess my weight at the end of my cruise and win a big fat prize.

What do you think I weighed? Try to be the first Facebook friend to guess my weight correctly. We’ll send an autographed copy of our new guidebook, Rick Steves’ Mediterranean Cruise Ports, and our Mediterranean Mosaic DVD (with eight TV shows) — which features the highlights of my time there — to the first person to get it right. So put your best guess in the comments below (one entry per person; for the complete rules, see Rick Steves’ Contest Rules). How much did I weigh at the end of my cruise? We’ll post the winner in 24 hours.

  1. I’m guessing you weighed 208 because there are lots of exercise opportunities onboard.

  2. Probably around 206 pounds. I remembered when I went on a recent 2 wk cruise, I actually lost 3 pounds with all the walking.

  3. 198. I’ve been on 5 great cruises. My friends kid me ’cause I always come back weighing at least 5 lbs less that when I started. I’m just so busy with all the activities on shore and onboard. Enjoy!!

  4. I’m guessing 218. Rick seems to love to partake in great food and drink, but he always balances that by staying quite active.

  5. I’m also going on the lower end–210 lbs. It was a working vacation and I get the sense that Rick has a hard time being sedentary.

  6. though food is readily available on cruise ships, there are so many healthy options presented at every meal. rick steves seems to be a disciplined perfectionist, so i am guessing that he made wise choices and that his weight has not changed much during his month of cruising. i guess that his post-cruise weight is 210.

  7. My guess is 216.5

that would be a 4 and 1/2 pound gain. I don’t think he would gain to much extra weight

  8. Self-discipline comes to mind when I think of RS. Also, contrarian. I believe he was about 195 — and is aiming to be even less.

  9. 211.5 Rick I know you were very busy walking around all the wonderful ports and I’m sure you took the steps on the ship

  10. 222, if you’re not careful, you can easily gain five pounds on a cruise – and you took two.

I have to add, I don’t gain weight on cruises. I like to do low carb style dieting and find lots of low-carb options on cruises (along with plenty of high carb options). Regular travel is harder to diet than cruise travel.

  11. more important . . . How long before you are back to your original weight? Most people say 7 to 10 days. I have both lost and gained on cruises.
