Istanbul-to-Ankara Night Train Pajama Party

After spending two busy days in Istanbul, our tour group catches the overnight train to Ankara. Settling into our compartments, we let the rhythm of the rails be our Anatolian lullaby.

  1. Whoa!!! It can be difficult enough just getting down the train aisle to the toilet, much less using the facilities…but a Turkish toilet? I hope those are some really smooth rails! I know what Western-style-toilet train facilities look like The Morning After – With a Turkish toilet, I shudder to even go there…

  2. Ok well you had me on the trip, except I am not sure now about the “night train”. I had to endure bathrooms like that in China 10 years ago, and I was 10 years younger and almost couldn`t get off the floor then. So I don`t know?

  3. When I took this tour, the train we took has both types of toilets -the “sit down” and the “squatty”. We have to look which box car they were located.

  4. We came across those facilities in Thailand. I had no trouble using them standing up like a urinal, but my body refused to cooperate for “the other”. (My wife said it was all in my head, but I resisted the temptation to attempt a witty comeback!) Luckily we had the foresight to make sure ahead of time that our overnight stays had western toilets. Now I know if I ever take an overnight train in Turkey, to make sure to take care of my needs beforehand.

  5. Wow, you really had a lot of room on that train! Wife and I had a similar experience on the express train from Osaka to Kansai Airport. We were the only two people in the entire car! I love walking through trains like that, I have many videos I took with my digital camera just like the one you posted. I think $30 is worth it to get a nicer seat in First Class. We opted not to between Amsterdam and London this fall, the price was double!!
