Spain: A Festival of Images

Traveling in Spain is a festival of images. While I was there earlier this spring, I chanced upon many beautiful moments…both lively and pristine.

Stepping away from the action of Granada’s Albayzín quarter and into the peace of the small Church of San Gregorio, I came upon a sister in white kneeling at the altar. She’s part of a holy team of Franciscan nuns who are committed to keeping prayers heaven bound 24/7. The silence, offering such a contrast to the hubbub outside, and the quiet persistence of her faith caused me to pause and be both thoughtful and thankful.

Seeing the delight ice cream brings a child is a universal slam dunk for a happy photo. (Here’s a tip: When photographing little kids, get down on their level.)

I enjoyed the scene at the Sunday morning antique market in Sevilla’s Plaza del Cabildo, near the cathedral. As I watched little kids earnestly trading soccer cards with adults, it occurred to me that Spanish kids trade cards of their soccer heroes just like American kids trade baseball cards.

Video: Granada Can Be So Sexy

Enjoying the sultry sunset…stones of the Alhambra glowing red…romance all around…and Gypsy flamenco erupting at the San Nicolás viewpoint in Granada. It’s a sultry moment indeed.

While you can pay for a flamenco show, the street-music scene in Granada (here each evening as reliably as the sunset) simply can’t be beaten. Put that on your list when visiting Andalucía’s Granada.

What’s your favorite street-music scene?

Video: The Crazy Streets of Granada

“Cheap beer. Great tapas. And what happens in Granada, stays in Granada.” That’s what my friend told me when I asked why there are so many hen and stag parties in this town. Surrounded by vitality and frolic, I had to grab a quick impromptu video. Take three minutes and walk with me for a dose of your basic love-of-life in Granada, here in the south of Spain. It’s conviviality gone wild: ham hocks hanging like bovine ballerinas from the ceiling, free tapas with your drink…and it’s so easy for a tourist to get swept away in all the fun.

Once again, I’m struck by how many of the best moments in travel are absolutely free.

Granada: The World Is a Classroom

I often imagine the fun of being a schoolteacher in an old European city, with all that history and great architecture around you. Here’s a hardworking teacher in Granada with his class on a field trip to the cathedral. Bring your crayons!

Granada: A Romantic View Complete with Music

My favorite viewpoint in Granada (the San Nicolás terrace in the Albayzín, across from the Alhambra) comes with great Gypsy music nearly all day long. You could pop a few euros into the musicians’ hat, sit down with a nice picnic, and enjoy an open-air concert as good as many you might pay for. And the view can’t be beat.
