Top Ten Reasons I’m with Her

As a traveler, I’m excited to have a president who respects and enjoys our world (and I prefer a president whom the world respects and enjoys).
As a writer, I want a president who reads.
As a pragmatist, I wish idealism worked…but have learned to be patient, collaborative, and incremental.
As a Christian, I care about the world’s poor, and believe people of every nation are of equal worth.
As a thinker, I want someone who celebrates being thoughtful.
As a capitalist and a job-creating entrepreneur, I want a government that will give my peers and me clear parameters for being good corporate citizens.
As a father, I want a president who will inspire my children.
As a member of a diverse society, I need a president who respects people who see things differently.
As a man, I’m excited to have a president who’s a woman.
As a voter, I want to be not ruled, but governed.
I posed for this photo with Hillary as a Democrat. Today, I support her as an American.

  1. I agree with your comments. BUT the photo pose is so typical of a MAN posing with a WOMEN. Do not belittle her.

  2. I agree with all your comments. It’s so nice to have my favorite travel writer and my favorite presidential candidate being friends of each other! I love your photo.

  3. Fantastic photo. What an opportunity. I feel your comments are right on. Keep up the good work.

  4. Rick…. enjoy your last Summer in Europe, as it will no longer exist when she starts WWIII!

  5. Rick, you are a seasoned professional with a great deal of knowledge to share pertaining to travel.

From my perspective, you can keep your politics to yourself.

  6. I disagree with most of your opinion of Hillary. As a Christian I can’t vote for someone who supports abortion or puts classified secrets at risk. I will try to not let this effect my feelings about Rick but I’m not sure what any of this has to be with travel?

  7. Rick, I have a few questions since your politics have invaded.
    1. As a Christian , how can you vote for someone that condones murdering babies?
    2. As a father, how can you think a liar and criminal can be an inspiration?

Some of the other points are questionable, however I find this the norm amongst the voters these days. I’m appalled we have let these two clowns be nominated. As fellow Christians, Steve, we should be looking toward God’s infallible word to guide us. Not whether somebody reads or is a woman. Keep up the excellent travel blog and show Steve, you are the best at it!

  8. Please, do take me off your list – I was so wrong – I thought better of you than this.

  9. We want so many of the same things. Funny how my conscience won’t let me vote for Clinton and yours will. Different strokes I suppose. Keep on politicking.

  10. I’ve been on four of your tours, and you definitely know the travel business. Would love for you to stick with travel and stay out of politics. Also trying to figure out why you think a liar and someone who condones abortion and supports governments that abuse women as inspirational. You’ve been smoking too much wacky weed. Love your tours, though, but probably won’t go on another one.

  11. How disappointing. Although long time RS fans and supporters, my family and I shared a collective “Yuck”, along with a gag reflex.
    Goodbye Rick

  12. Thanks for your comments – you are right on. Keep up the good work. Look forward to next tour with your group.

  13. I am pleased to see you share your opinions and values despite the high potential for a wide variety of responses. A person of integrity stands by their convictions with out applying the popular/non-popular test. Personally; I’m with her AND you!

  14. In your profession you should stay out of politics you have irritated over half of your business.
Good luck in your future remove me also from any of your comments.

  15. All the qualities you presented are what I want from my friends. Being president requires other qualities. Your 8th reason should be a given for a candidate, not a reason for voting for a candidate. Shame on you because it’s condescending. I’ve never liked ivory tower thinking because it’s more like platitudes instead of logic, no matter who does it.

  16. I could have guessed that from your thoughtful, considerate stance in issues related to travel and the people you meet. I’m with her, too, and respect your bravery in stating your position. Thanks for posting!

  17. Kudos Rick. I enjoy your travel writing, tv shows and activism. I think more than anything, we need Hillary, because our alternative is someone who will alienate us from the majority of the world. Love all that you do, would love a chance to tell you over a spliff. Please keep doing great work and having the courage of your convictions to voice what you believe. You’re a benefit to us all.

  18. As a citizen who is terrified of a megalomaniac with a history of bankruptcies I could not agree more strongly with you, Rick! Keep up the good work.

  19. Everyone is entitled to vote for who they feel Represents Their own Ideologies, saying he should stay out of Politics is ridiculous. Or that he can’t be a Christian (or as a Christian how can he support her) because He supports a Nominee who is pro-choice. Be you a traveler a writer a dancer a poet or a cook or anything or anyone, you are free to vote for who you want. Keep up the good work rick!!! Keep on traveling!!

  20. Disappointing commentary from you Rick. We admire what you have done for the world of travel. We will be on one of your tours next month. Hillary is a horrible candidate! She will follow Obama’s disastrous policies that are slowly destroying this country, economy-wise and morality-wise. Uncontrollable spending and debt. Too bad the liberal press is so one sided. Hillary is never criticized by them yet they distort and rearrange everything Trump says or does. If you want to hear fair commentary watch Fox news. I’m still a fan of what you do for travel, but disappointed in your politics. Like others I think you should consider keeping your opinions to yourself.

  21. I believe Mr steves is offering his unique views and offering a global perspective on this election. One of the great things about being an American is we have to freedom to express our personal views. To those that are offended by this right and feel the need to stop following and or reading Mr steves blogs, I’m sure he’s up late at night worried about it (NOT!)

  22. Rick, While I agree with you, I’d prefer that your blog and the comments stick to travel issues. We get enough political views in other places.

  23. Very disappointing. This travel professional will no longer be encouraging people to go on any of your tours. Using your popularity as a travel personality to try and influence people to vote for an immoral liar is unbecoming of you.

On a personal level, as a Christian, you should really evaluate what kind of person deserves your support. It should never go to someone who advocates murder.

  24. Sometimes we all have to take a stand due to the critical nature of the situation. This is just one of those times. Thanks for taking a stand even though you may lose some fans. It is such a shame we Americans cannot come together on this issue and I hope it does not eventually lead to the ultimate demise of our homeland. But it just might!

  25. Thank you for going out on a limb with this. I happen to agree with all your points. You are just saying what you would do and if others disagree with you so be it. I can’t quite understand the hate and anger behind the non Hillary fans. And their alternative would be better? Thanks again, and thanks for encouraging us to go to Iran where we had the best trip ever! We are going back next year.

  26. This is no ordinary election. This year, every one of us must stand up for what we believe in as American citizens. However one views Hillary, she is far better than a man whose lifetime is filled with arrogance, deception, and discrimination. Read what his ghostwriter for The Art of the Deal, Tony Schwartz, who knew Trump well, has to say about him. You will agree Trump does not belong in the Presidency. Thank you, Rick Steves, for being brave enough to stand up for what you believe in, knowing it would arouse controversy. I’m with you, and Hillary.

  27. Steve,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As the friendly, outgoing, inquisitive and open-minded person that you are, reflected in your writings and your TV shows, I cannot imagine you not voting for her. Thanks, and keep on traveling and writing and reflecting the best in Americans!

  28. Not a huge Hillary fan, but it’s no contest. Hillary is a vote for normalcy and sanity. On board with ya, Rick, and keep being political.

  29. Traveling helps shape my politics. Certainly, Rick, you have aright to share your political views. Especially when they agree with mine!

  30. I cannot believe how many people who disagree with Rick’s opinion have asked to be removed or will not continue to support his business. This is crazy to me. Part of our country’s issues recently have been no one talking to anyone with a different opinion or compromising on anything. Wouldn’t it be better to continue to participate as travel is of course one area where you meet all kinds of different people with different experiences, outlooks and opinions. If we want to move forward we cant keep quitting and taking are ball and going home every time we disagree with someone.

  31. Like our next President, I don’t think that we the people are so fragile and thin-skinned that we should avoid communicating what we believe because those who disagree won’t be up to the challenge of growing together and making America better.

    I think we’re better together!

I also think that if the electorate gets out and votes, our representatives will know just how clearly this isn’t a country full of fraidy cats, it’s just that the fraidy cats among us make more noise.

  32. I am a Christian. I can’t support any person who allows Americans to die (Bengazi) and who believes in abortion. I also could never trust her. Praying she will not prevail. But I love your shows!!!!

  33. I don’t remember Trump being responsible for the deaths of 4 people (benghazi) or him causing security risks for our country. Hillary and Bill are corrupt and are the cause of the mysterious deaths of 45 associates of theirs over the years. She is a liar and totally corrupt. I am ashamed of you Rick. Hillary, if she gets elected, will end America as we have known it.Look up her record she has done nothing for anyone other than herself and the Clintons. Quit drinking the Democratic coolaid.

  34. Rick is an elitist. He stands with Hillary because he doesn’t care about her lies, her trading of favors for money, her view on corporate bailouts, or her terrible record on dealing with abuse of women in Muslim countries. None of that matter to Rick. Instead its all about his elitism.

As an elitist, Rick repeats their talking points. Yes Rick, Trump never reads. Yes Rick, Trump is not a capitalist. Yes Rick, Bill Clinton treats women better than Trump. And oh yeah, lets not forget that Trump is a racist.

Now we see why Rick never takes his viewers to the tougher areas of Europe. He never shows the illegal immigration, or the no-go areas where police fear to go, or anything that would tarnish the elitist dream. Ordinary travelers know all this of course. So does Rick, but like all elitists he feels no need to be honest. Its all about Rick and his elite position.

  35. On second thought, I’ll just cancel my monthly check to KCET. That network has Rick on all the time. Now that I know his elitist views and his contempt for those of us who support Trump, I’ll save my money. KCET can get their support from other elitists.

I just discovered Rick thinks BREXIT was all messed up too – people voting for freedom from bureaucrats in some other country is a bad thing, according to Rick.

Time to vote with our money folks!

  36. A persons brand is the whole person. I appreciate that Ricks transparent about his whole self and I am proud to support such an entrepreneur that shares his mind as well as his travel knowledge. Way to go Rick. You still have tons of fans that love and support you.

  37. Rick, I hardly ever comment on things on the internet, but I wanted to let you know I 100% support everything you listed. Hillary beat out all other candidates as the most honest this election round, she’s really dedicated, and cares about the people. I think this post does relate to travel, because if Trump is elected, people will see the US, and therefore Americans, in a negative light. It was hard enough to travel abroad during the Iraq war.

We must not let those who want to build walls win, we must vote for community, working together, and not being afraid of others who are different. If travel has taught me anything, it is tolerance, and appreciation for civility with those you disagree with or don’t understand. Hillary is both of those things, and a lot of the other commenters on here are not.

  38. I could not agree with you more, Rick. As a migrant American, who has has been living in US for 41 years and graduated with degrees and an avid traveler mostly in conflict zones and a Humanitarian volunteer, I admire your stand and calling out black and white and sometimes grey issues of our global society. I am a volunteer with CGI ( Clinton Global Initiatives). There could not be a better Presidential candidate than Hillary for our time. #I’mwithher.

  39. I can’t trust her and as a former soldier I dislike her in any capacity that involves our military.

  40. Having a president who is respected by other world leaders and has experience dealing with them is important as we become a global community. Thank you for your views and comments!

  41. I agree with you, Steve, 100%! I appreciate your writing this. We need to underscore the importance of this election, and I hope the American voter realizes that Hillary Clinton is more than qualified and capable to be president. Again, thank you, Steve!

  42. I have been on 3 of your tours and also travel extensively in Europe. I support your views on having a president who will bring our country together not divide it. I have yet to find any locals from the European countries I have visited who think Trump is anything but a Buffoon and hate monger! And how can anyone claim to be a Christian vote for someone who wants to build walls and make our country haters of anyone not like them??? You go Rick!

  43. I usually don’t comment on politics but YES I AM WITH HER! I am hoping we return to a time when people take responsibility for their own happiness and success. And not let someone tell them to be mad and unhappy with our country and that our country is a s*** bomb. Even in the worst of times during many wars Americans stuck together and did the work to help fix the problem. But we only want to like people that believe in exactly what we believe in. No respect for the perspective and lives of others. Hold your congress to go to work and do the job they were hired to do!

  44. Rick,
Well, you’ve really opened up a can of worms this time! Just looking at all the previous comments, it’s amazing how so many of us Americans have become so self righteous and how we have come to hate eachother, or at least hate those who disagree with us. It is very scary! So much hate and it’s just stupid!

  45. My comment has absolutely nothing to do with politics. Just wanted to say that I think it’s funny how many people refer to Rick Steves as “Steve.” Maybe that’s a result of auto-correct. Anyway, I wonder if Rick finds that funny, irritating, or doesn’t care.

  46. I used to buy your book and speak highly of your books, but after this I won’t be you. I will never buy your books again. Should of remained silent on this one.

  47. Thank you Rick for being honest and strong understanding that the hate mail would follow you. I am amazed that so many people who consider themselves christian can be so bitter and hateful. If Hillary is that evil, how can anyone justify thinking that Trump is not. Having just returned from 6 weeks in Europe I can report that 9 of 10 people we spoke with wanted to know how anyone could speak the way Trump does and have Americans vote for him. I wish i were able to answer that question. If you don’t like Hillary I understand your right to do so.I don’t understand your hatred and I don’t understand how anyone could vote for a mad man.

Thanks Rick for opening my eyes to the joys of Europe and the diversity of our varied cultures. Thank you for the courage to say what you have said.

  48. We all have to vote for one of the candidates to preserve our “right” to complain about our govt. But I have serious doubts about the intelligence/character of anyone who supports either one of the candidates with any enthusiasm! That said, advice about politics is not my reason for buying his books, so I will keep on buying and using them.

  49. Last year you pulled a post I made encouraging people to be aware of the new dangers in Europe caused by the mass immigration there. Now you endorse Clinton who supports illegal immigration and wants to bring thousands of mideast “refugees ” here. It would be better and cheaper to establish quality refugee centers in the mideast where they could be near family, friends and culture and then return to their home countries to help rebuild them when the wars are over. Democrats want them here because they know they’ll vote Democrat. This woman is as unethical as they get you support her for president. I’m not that fond of Trump but I’m with HIM.

  50. Rick,

The several comments from readers who urge you to “stay out of politics” amuses me as it reveals the fundamental problem with our democratic experiment in America. Obama and Hillary Clinton’s messages have consistently tried to make the point that democracy is very, very difficult (As an online community of travelers, we have all seen this). But the first step is to have the conversation. To suggest anyone “stay out of politics” perpetuates our current state of political extremes where we try to out-sound bite each other with (usually inaccurate)one-liners. We are better than this. Keep on talking.

  51. AMEN Rick!! How do people who cite their reasons for not liking Hillary (liar, cheat, etc ,etc) rationalize Trump being a liar, a cheat, magalomaniac, and all around baffoon, etc, etc? They must not realize that our President needs to be able to function on the world stage with a reasonable amount of respect from the other world leaders. Bullying doesn’t really work very well outside the school grounds and streets.

  52. This country would never elect a true Christian president. The current social climate wouldn’t allow it. Anyone can say they’re “Christian” on paper and helping the poor or caring about world rights does not automatically make you a Christian. Supporting abortion is not Christian.

  53. Rick, I agree with your 10 points. To those who disagree, the freedoms of America guarantee you the right to disagree and not buy Rick’s excellent guides. That is your choice. However, when you go into the voting booth, please consider the alternative. Do you agree with Trump, who is the opposite of Clinton in Rick’s 10 points? From a traveler’s perspective, he would be a disaster. The reactions to Trump from ordinary people overseas is similar to the reactions to the nomination of Sarah Palin for vice president I heard eight years ago: How could we nominate such an ignorant person? What does the Vice President do? And, what does “Lipstick on a Pig” mean?

  54. I wish you would watch the documentary that will be viewed at Cannes and is free on the internet NOW called Clinton Cash.
I used to appreciate the Clinton Initiatives charity, but not since I watched this movie. It would be hard for me to endorse her after watching that.

  55. 10 years ago when I moved to Rome, I was overwhelmed. But your book oriented me and helped me discover many wonderful things in Rome and Italy, as a whole. Since then, I have appreciated your perspective, and I still do. Thank you for this. I agree wholeheartedly. Also thank you for not sticking to travel and speaking on politics because our politics affect the world we love.

  56. We buy your books when we travel to Europe, watch your TV shows and read your blog and website. However, hope you “pause before you post,” before you publish more political commentary. If you had backed up your comments with facts of how one political candidate ot the other might affect international travel by Americans, I might feel differently. But in this case, it just seems you’re trying to influence your customers to vote for the politician of your choice. Oh, and your blog post’s title “Top ten reasons I’m with her.” What a disappointment. Thought you were going to introduce us to your new sweetheart.

  57. Sorry to see you with this liar\ crook. I enjoy your videos, why can’t you just stick to this ?
If you are a Christian, you know she is Satan on earth.

  58. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Traveling to other countries really is an eye opener, and one reason why I think it is so important to travel to other countries is to see what we share with others is the same (for example, all people want to live in safety, all parents want their children to have a better life, etc.), and that some of life’s “normalities” can be just a little different from each other.

I am not one either, who tends to make political comments, but I am extremely distressed with this election. I will likely share your thoughtful and reasoned comments. I, too, find that with the two candidates, I will support her over him.

  59. I agree with you Rick. I also know it must have taken a lot of guts for you to post your feelings knowing the hatred of Trump advocates toward anyone with a differing opinion. I’m for a positive attitude and an open mind. Will be going to France this Oct. and looking forward to making many new friends.

  60. Rick, you have been my travel-guide crush for so long that I almost- almost wanted to forgive you for this careless mixing of travel and politics. But seeing you with Hilarity just breaks all rules of having a crush on total unknown strangers who share amazing travel stories. Really. It does. I checked. See of 12, rule 75, section B. It’s there.

So I will go back to my wild animals crush Jack Hannah. Unless of course, I find a pic of him leaning all over Hilarity- or for that matter, the Donald. All of you should do what you do best- for you, it’s travel. For Hilarity, it’s blatant disregard for any sacred US policy. For the Donald, clearly it’s the hair.

For Jack Hannah, he can bring his lions and tigers and bears anytime. Oh my.

And lastly, anymore of this nonsense and I’m unsubscribing. I read blogs like yours to get away from this junk. Don’t go breaking my heart.

  61. Rick we own all of your DVDs and love your travel blog and subscribed to you on YouTube. It is deeply troubling to see an Entertainer like yourself choose sides in a political race, stay out of politics!! They do not belong with a person like you. You have built a wonderful brand that frankly all people from all races and backgrounds and political parties enjoy, please stop picking sides in stupid political Arenas and stick to what you do best… your travel blog!! My wife and I think you are crazy fun, please don’t make us think you’re just crazy!!!

  62. Thank you for articulately offering your thoughts on the election.
It’s a tragedy that other Americans who disagree with you feel compelled to wall themselves off from anything that contradicts their generally poorly researched world view.
It would improve the quality of life here if “the other side” discussed, instead of dismissed, any thoughts, skin tone, religion, political party, economic state,or education level that doesn’t precisely mimic their own.
Enraged and terrified is not the way to live.

  63. I’m with her too. I am a devoted Christian and Democrat/Independent at the same time. I live in Atlanta and most of my friends are Republican who assume Dems are Unbelievers. I don’t fit the mold.
I applaud your stance, after all, we do have freedom of speech here. Even if you were for the other guy, I would still be a fan of all you do for us travelers. I am going on my third tour in October – 17 Days in Italy!
    Judy B
    Atlanta

  64. How dare you have an opinion Rick! I wonder how these people who are critiquing your reasoning & choice for president would be acting if you endorsed Trump? Do these people only interact with others who agree with their choice?

  65. So tired of politics invading everything. Yes, support whoever you think will be the best president – but please don’t use the fact that we use your business (and pay for it – as I’ve purchased your books and dvds) to foist your personal political positions upon us.

This makes me as angry as when I went to an Eagle concert and they inserted political messages between almost every song.

Your political opinions are not what I come here for, and I find this all exploitative and, quite frankly, irritating.

BTW – I think both candidates are awful.

  66. I agree with all 10 points, Rick, and I can easily add 10 more of my own. Still, I look to you and your web site for information on the joys of travel and an escape from the unpleasant barrage of political news. It’s your site and your right to decide on content, but there are other places where you can join the fray.

  67. I like you as a person but I hate your politics, keep on traveling and don’t alienate an important percentage of your customer base it brings no good feelings towards you
    or your company.

  68. I think it has been lost on America that the basis for this democracy was to separate church from state, so I find it disturbing that the Christian card comes up over and over, there are many Americans that are many other religions, and some that are none.

  69. Kudos, Rick! As someone who has travelled the world, it is no wonder you see the urgent need to support a candidate that will stand up to a close-minded worldview represented by her opponent and his supporters.

  70. I also agree with Rick. For the people who do not, that is your choice. That is why America is so great, we all have the right to vote for who we choose. I have been traveling to Europe every year since 2002 (no tours, just a guidebook), and as much as I love the places and people of Europe, I am thankful I am an American. We are not without problems, and there is no easy fix for some of them, but I have faith in America.

  71. I like your travel books, shows, travel advice and tours. But placing your political views on your business website puts you on the same level as Madonna, Katy Perry, George Clooney and countless other bimbos. Stick to travel please.

  72. As a capitalist: How can you be so “impressed” with Cuba a nation that was ruined during the last 56 years. I tend to agree with you in most points, and I love your travel skills (I wish I had 10% as much as you do) but I am disappointed with your articles on Cuba. Their people are not “wonderful”, they are SLAVES to the same system you have seen collapse in Eastern Europe, and a system you have seen made Eastern Europe lag behind its neighbors.

  73. I’m with her, too. The other option is off-balance and dangerous. With all the crazy coming out of his mouth, along with his long record of working against the middle class, I can’t understand why any American is WITH him.

  74. Michael Jordan is said to have answered the question asking him why he has never formally endorsed a Democratic candidate, even though he has the good sense to vote Democratic and donate to Democratic causes, by pointing out that “Republicans buy sneakers, too.”

Now that’s the kind of remark that strikes me as less than christian in its sentiment — it sounds a bit venal to my ear. So it also seems strange to me that so many commenters claiming ownership of the label ‘christian’ are shaking their finger at you, Rick, and saying you should not express your opinions on your own blog page.

Free speech, and christian mores, are not just for those we agree with, my friends! It’s easy to stand up for the rights of people whose views coincide with your own. We used to hear red-staters boast that they may not agree with us (in the civilized parts of the country) but they will defend our right to speak out. Whatever happened to that commitment? Is the Southern code of gentlemanly honor no more? I find myself wishing the South would rise again, and keep going until the real America didn’t have to be dragged down by it anymore. Leave us elitists with our hifalutin beliefs in the Constitution and all of its ivory tower ideas like liberty and equality to embrace the future, while you hunker down and spend your energy polishing your guns. If we do end up building a wall, I hope the border with Mexico isn’t the line that we pick to put it up at.

  75. I love how you voice your opinion and with a solid and well written perspective that reflects your views. I also applaud you for doing this when you know it might impact your business or perceptions that some customers have of you.

I have seen you state on several occasions that the people that come on your RS Tours “pack light and carry their own bags”. You make this ‘feature’ of traveling with your company well known so as to not attract the wrong type of clientele. I love that about you. I also love that you are doing the same by expressing your support of Hillary. You know it will drive some customers away from you but you wouldn’t want those narrow minded folks on your tours anyway. For all the people that have commented on this thread stating they will no longer buy your books or travel with your company I can just hear you saying “good riddance”! Keep on traveling Rick! And keep on expressing your opinions and encourage others to do the same!

  76. It amazes me how many people dislike Hillary because of a perceived untruthfulness. Non-partisan fact checkers have found Hillary to be the most honest candidate of all the primary candidates and Trump by far the most dishonest. I’m also amazed at how many people are surprised that Rick expressed a political opinion as he has done so for as long as I have been following him. I am in complete agreement that Trump is dangerous on many levels. I’m with her, too.

  77. Thank you, Rick, for your eloquent statement. I appreciate your public support of organizations such as Bread for the World, and think it is important to give our beliefs a public voice.

  78. “Off balance,” “narrow-minded,” “dangerous,” “generally poor researched view of the world,” “enraged,” “terrified,” “closeted anarchist,” “hatred of Trump advocates,” “hate and anger.” Such tolerant and thoughtful discussion. I’m not off-balance, narrow minded, dangerous, or enraged. I’m a college educated, gainfully employed, Christian, patriotic, grandmother/wife/mother,/sister, well-read in politics (I was a political science major in college). I’ve studied both candidates and have come to the decision that Trump is the better candidate. Doesn’t make me a raving lunatic and frankly, it was nice to read Rick’s travel blog to escape the over-the-top rhetoric from both sides. The point isn’t that Rick shouldn’t have a different view on politics, it’s just that perhaps this is the wrong forum for it. However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Rick’s opinion is that Hillary is his candidate of choice, and he doesn’t really care what his customers think of him. Mine is that I don’t have to spend my money with this company, but not because I disagree with his politics.

  79. You have as much right to comment on politics as anyone! Don’t let the turkeys get you down! You are stating your opinion using reasoned arguments, while others are reacting from hate and fear. No wonder our world is in such turmoil! If I don’t agree with someone, my Christian upbringing tells me not to attack. I can disagree sensibly or I can keep my mouth shut!

  80. Don’t forget reason #11!!!! PBS is a primarily democratic vehicle and it is the reason, I suspect, that you are a wealthy man, Rick!

  81. Hats off to you for taking a stand, Rick! I’m 100% with you and her! Hard to fathom the irrational depths of hate your post has stirred up – very depressing! @imwithher

  82. Besides being a liar let us look at what her husband says about her:
Bill says: “In law school Hillary worked on legal services for the poor.”
    The facts are:
Hillary’s main extra-curricular activity in law school was helping the Black Panthers, on trial in Connecticut for torturing and killing a federal agent.
She went to court every day as part of a law student monitoring committee trying to spot civil rights violations and develop grounds for appeal.

Bill says: “Hillary spent a year after graduation working on a children’s rights project for poor kids.”
    The facts are:
Hillary interned with Bob Truehaft, the head of the California Communist Party.
She met Bob when he represented the Panthers and traveled all the way to San Francisco to take an internship with him.

Bill says: “Hillary could have written her own job ticket, but she turned down all the lucrative job offers.”
    The facts are:
She flunked the DC bar exam, yes, flunked, it is a matter of record, and only passed the Arkansas bar.
She had no job offers in Arkansas, none, and only got hired by the University of Arkansas Law School at Fayetteville because Bill was already teaching there.
She did not join the prestigious Rose Law Firm until Bill became Arkansas Attorney General and was made a partner only after he was elected Arkansas Governor.

Bill says: “President Carter appointed Hillary to the Legal Services Board of Directors and she became its chairman.”
    The facts are:
The appointment was in exchange for Bill’s support for Carter in his 1980 primary against Ted Kennedy.
Hillary then became chairman in a coup in which she won a majority away from Carter’s choice to be chairman.

Bill says: “She served on the board of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital.”
    The facts are:
    Yes she did.
But her main board activity, not mentioned by Bill, was to sit on the Wal-mart board of directors, for a substantial fee.
She was silent about their labor and health care practices.

Bill says: “Hillary didn’t succeed at getting heal th care for all Americans in 1994 but she kept working at it and helped to create the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) that provides five million children with health insurance.”
    The facts are:
Hillary had nothing to do with creating CHIP.
It was included in the budget deal between Clinton and Republican Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott.
I know; I helped to negotiate the deal.
The money came half from the budget deal and half from the Attorney Generals’ tobacco settlement.
Hillary had nothing to do with either source of funds.

Bill says: “Hillary was the face of America all over the world.”
    The facts are:
Her visits were part of a program to get her out of town so that Bill would not appear weak by feeding stories that Hillary was running the White House.
Her visits abroad were entirely touristic and symbolic and there was no substantive diplomacy on any of them.

Bill says: “Hillary was an excellent Senator who kept fighting for children’s and women’s issues.”
    The facts are:
Other than totally meaningless legislation like changing the names on courthouses and post offices,
She has passed only four substantive pieces of legislation.
One set up a national park in Puerto Rico.
A second provided respite care for family members helping their relatives through Alzheimer’s or other conditions.
And two were routine bills to aid 911 victims and responders which were sponsored by the entire NY delegation.
Presently she is trying to have the US memorialize the Woodstock fiasco of 40 years ago

Here is what bothers me more than anything else about Hillary Clinton.
She has done everything possible to weaken the President and our country (that’s you and me!) when it comes to the war on terror.

    1. She wants to close GITMO and move the combatants to the USA where they would have access to our legal system.
    2. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of suspected Al Qaeda phone calls to/from the USA.
    3. She wants to grant constitutional rights to enemy combatants captured on the battlefield.
    4. She wants to eliminate the monitoring of money transfers between suspected Al Qaeda c ells and supporters in the USA.
    5. She wants to eliminate the type of interrogation tactics used by the military & CIA where coercion might be used when questioning
Known Terrorists even though such tactics might save American lives.

One cannot think of a single bill Hillary has introduced or a single comment she has made that would tend to strengthen our country in the War on Terror.
But, one can think of a lot of comments she has made that weaken our country and makes it a more dangerous situation for all of us.

  83. Yep…Rick my wife and I are ‘with YOU’. For all your reasons Hillary is our choice. We ‘Ricknics need to pull together on this one! I’m a long-time (Rockefeller) Republican (that means socially liberal) but I feel this is a ‘defining momment’ for America. Thanks for weighing in!

  84. Rick, Thanks for your comments. This is too critical a time to shy away from the discussion of ideas and directions for our democracy. I would continue to access and enjoy all of your products whatever your politics. You have consistently illustrated that travel promotes an open mind (in healthy people) and understanding of other cultures. We need lots more of that.

  85. Dear M. Clayton- Aug 02, 2016 06:31 AM,

Before posting Dick Morris’ discredited column word for word as if your independent research brought these facts into evidence, you may want to read PolitiFacts’ analysis, or the Snopes page on it.
It’s a shame they destroy every point in your post.
Actually, no it’s not; it’s great to have facts to counter reflex-posted nonsense.

  86. It’s a marker of just how popular Rick has become that the astroturf operatives feel the need to pretend to be the voices of real people in the planted anti-Hillary propaganda items above.

It’s also a marker of just how much those same shameless PR firms underestimate we the people — imagining that anyone who is bright enough to follow Rick could possibly fall for their idiocratic ploys, or believe that real people like you and me would ever hold such contradictory and foolish opinions about what constitutes christian virtue or American idealism. What a laugh, no? Trumpism as pro-American or morally upright!

  87. I will be cancelling my Rick Steves tour and subscription after seeing that disgusting photo and what he posted.

  88. Good for you Rick for voicing your position. This is a crucial election. Can we stand by and be silent if our silence allows a racist, sexist, misogynist narcissist to become President of this country? No, we can’t be silent. Good for you for speaking out (and I have also continued to speak up as well, but I don’t have your huge audience). Here’s hoping some of the people making horrible comments reconsider their positions or at least, apologize for their insults.

  89. It amazes me that after all these days have gone by and Mr Trump has totally gone off the rails that there are still people out there that would put their life, their children’s life and future generations in the hand of this man. And again don’t forget not everyone is a Christian in this country. There are actually quite a few other religions and some people that have none.

  90. It amazes me how many people dislike Hillary because of a perceived untruthfulness. Non-partisan fact checkers have found Hillary to be the most honest candidate of all the primary candidates

Hillary Clinton is many things, but truthful she is not. If you think she’s the best choice, please support her enthusiastically. But do not insult my intelligence by insisting she is truthful.

  91. I’m with her, too, Rick! I hear the jihad in Europe is lovely this time of year thanks to Frau Merkel, and we need a strong woman to bring that kind of change to US&A!

  92. I am not at all surprised that someone who has travelled as extensively in Europe as you have would feel compelled to speak out about this election. I am a Canadian who has travelled in both the U.S. and Europe. My husband and I have enjoyed all our travels and the wonderful people we have met. Getting outside your own country opens up so much wider a view of the world. I feel that Hillary Clinton would bring a more positive view of the United States to the world stage. She seems to understand more about the cooperation and tolerance the world needs now. Good for you for using your platform to speak out for something you believe in.

  93. I am pleased to see that you stand behind your convictions and share your opinions. Yes, this does have to do with travel as I fear her opponent will alienate us from the majority of the world.

  94. Dear Rick,

You travelled a lot in your Europe. The ideas of Bernie Sanders are common here for many decades. You have seen how good our social security is developped. You have seen that there is paid maternity leave, low college money and several other benefits of Social Democratism.

Your support must have gone to Bernie Sanders, Rick…

  95. I find it very disappointing that a man whose work has been so rewarding to me for many years, has suddenly shown a need to get into the political muck. Few of your points are even valid. “As a father, I want someone who inspires my children”. And you chose either of these candidates to make such a statement.

My high regard for you has plummeted. Mind your knitting, Sir.

  96. Not a fan of the Hillary nor the Trump here Rick… My vote will be “wasted” on the best choice of the current candidates, Gary Johnson. If a candidate proposing smaller government would get into office, I would stand a better chance of keeping more of my paycheck so I can travel as well. See you down the road…Happy taxes, I mean happy travels.

  97. After reading these comments, one thing is real clear. Unless you are a Hillary fan, don’t ever sign up for one of Rick’s tours. Can you imagine hiw you woukd be treated if someone found out you were not a Hillary fan? Or, God forbid, you voted for Trump? Talk about being a Jew in iran — I can’t imagine spending a day with such a bunch of collectivists.

  98. After watching “Travels in Europe” for many years, I not only have traveled to Europe, but have been living in two countries for over 10 years now. Europe can learn from the US, the US can learn from Europe. As far as your political commentary, I am a bit distressed with a self identified Christian candidate claiming the Bible guides her everyday ..to what? lie, cheat, to champion abortion. I am distressed that as a voter, you want to be “ruled” vs. “governed”. Hello, that was the point of the Revolution, to be self governed, not ruled. And seriously, you need the government to tell you how to be a good corporate citizen? Many in Europe see the US declining into the ultimate “Nanny State”. They ask frequently, how a country with the population size of the US has only Clinton and Trump as the options.

  99. After witnessing Trump’s bizarre downward spiral, I must commend you for endorsing the only sensible candidate! Bravo! You as always are very wise.

  100. I found it both astonishing and quite disheartening to read so many replies that expect you, the consummate traveler, to not have a political opinion. You, more than most, have a global view of the world and it’s workings. It’s your site, and you should feel free to comment. In fact, I see it as a duty and obligation to speak out – and yours was very tastefully done. I thought travel was supposed to enlarge one’s view – clearly, too many who replied haven’t traveled nearly enough.

  101. Rick, It takes a lot of courage to be so open about your political beliefs in this day and age. I live in the red state of Texas, and have considered myself a conservative all my life – until this election. Almost everyone I know will vote Republican, and I have had some very difficult conversations with very dear friends and family concerning this election. They all know that I am alarmed by the anger and the willful ignorance coming from the far right, and have come to realize that I no longer have a party. I will always believe that abortion is murder; therefore, I will never be a Democrat either. However, given that Roe v Wade is law, and I do not see a path to it being overturned any time soon, in this election, I’m with her.

  102. I didn’t know that there are two Hillary Clintons. The one you write about is no match in dreadfulness for Donald Trump; the real Hillary Clinton is. Let’s examine her real character.

God help your children if Hillary Clinton “inspires” them. She is a reverse role model. Hillary Clinton is an inveterate liar. She said she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. She was born six years after he climbed Mt. Everest. She said she dodged sniper fire in Bosnia. Clinton corrupts everything she is involved in. She made the White House into a fundraising center. Her preoccupation at the State Department was raising money for the Clinton Foundation. Several charity monitors said it spends an inordinate amount of money on travel and administrative costs. For Clinton, charity truly begins at home.

Our would-be “president who reads” never read the security rules, or her classified emails. According to Clinton, none of her emails were marked classified. If that’s true, and it’s not, Clinton served four years as Secretary of State without ever wondering why she never saw a classified email. That’s not very “thoughtful.” Neither was her whole email setup. She has endangered her fellow citizens and made herself vulnerable to blackmail.

Hillary Clinton never read her hero, Margaret Sanger, the founder of what’s now Planned Parenthood. Sanger wrote “…I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization.”

There’s nothing “pragmatic” about promising everyone a free college education. Even if the money existed, the education system wouldn’t be able to take on more students without watering down quality. When it comes to “caring about the world’s poor,” Clinton, like Trump, will implement trade policies that will impoverish the world. Her minimum wage proposal will make ban employment for people with marginal skills. You should have noticed this in Seattle.

Clinton’s “capitalism” is the crony variety. Her commodities profits were mathematically impossible. Her Whitewater partners had to loot a savings and loan to save her from bankruptcy. She did so poorly at her law firm that she hid her billing records for two years.

Clinton wants to repeal the First Amendment. She doesn’t think people like Citizens United should be allowed to make documentaries that criticize her. She didn’t want to let the Little Sisters of the Poor exercise their religion.

Under Hillary Clinton’s nanny state, you will be able to do whatever you want as long as it’s mandatory. You will be ruled. Clinton has made it clear that she will make laws without going through Congress. Self-government and constitutional rule will continue their downward spiral.

On the bright side, she’ll protect public broadcasting.

  103. It is amazing so many people look past the Clinton history of corruption, shady deals, Bill’s infidelity coverup, letting classified documents out into the world, not supporting out people overseas, big business support, a history of associates dying mysteriously over the years and untruths. I am not a Trump fan, I have disliked that man as long as I was aware he existed. But I have to side against Rick on this one……I would rather have the uncertainty of a Trump Presidency than the definite negatives of 4 or 8 years of Clinton corruption. But I guess if you like a President who reads and inspires your children by lying … then everything else can be forgiven.

  104. I am disappointed at the many comments suggesting that Rick Steves should stick to travel comments. He is a citizen of the United States and has every right, in fact a responsibility, to speak up and share his opinions. He is a voter and, fortunately, a thoughtful intelligent, and experienced man. His mature observations of both Americans and citizens of many other countries over years and through a number of American presidents are especially valuable. It is a pity that more American citizens are not speaking up in a reasoned fashion instead of in the useless personal attacks they seems to enjoy foisting off on people who do not agree with them. We all need periodic refreshers about democracy. We are getting one in this election. May we always welcome comments from men and women like Mr. Steves.,

  105. Rick,
We’ve enjoyed traveling with your group in England, & have enjoyed your recommendations on our various trips to Europe, but differ greatly with you regarding your choice for President… Like other comments before abortion does not fit in with anyone who is a Christian, nor do all the other activities of the Clinton family.

A poor choice “my friend”. Keep on traveling and filming those experiences. Politics should be verboten.

  106. “Now we see why Rick never takes his viewers to the tougher areas of Europe. He never shows the illegal immigration, or the no-go areas where police fear to go, or anything that would tarnish the elitist dream. Ordinary travelers know all this of course. So does Rick, but like all elitists he feels no need to be honest. Its all about Rick and his elite position.”

You might want to take a look at this:

    http://blog.ricksteves.com/blog/my-redemption-story-inflicting-the-fear-of-a-little-homelessness-on-a-paying-customer/

If there was a big interest in seeing the darker sides of the countries or cities the tours go to, I’m sure they would be doing that. But what I see on the forums are posts wanting advice on how to avoid immigrant camps or ‘unsafe’ areas, unease with the possibility of seeing garbage and rats in the streets, and discomfort with anything that might be less than attractive or clean. They don’t want to experience the demonstrations because they might get shot, or use the metro stations because they might get blown up. Oh, but,” I want to experience the real ____.”

It’s not the tour operator but the customers who are calling the shots: most don’t want to spend thousands of dollars dealing with anything unpleasant or which will make them uncomfortable or fearful, it seems.

The truth of the matter is that the dark side is often all around you if you only choose to see it.

  107. Sigh. I am an American and a strong liberal, a good person, and a traveler with family, and this is so depressing to read as someone who has literally watched all of your videos and listened to much of your travel advice. Maybe world travel has made me realize I am “not with Her” because unlike “Her,” I cannot abide the violence she supports towards other countries.

I was just looking at your blog for advice about where to go in England next summer. This will be my last time coming here.

Due to this endorsement, I will not be purchasing your guide books or reading your blog or watching your youtube travel clips further. Such propagandistic political statements have no place on a travel site — which is meant to appeal to people seeking a better, not a worse, world. Hillary Clinton is the only Democratic candidate I have ever felt too uncomfortable to vote for, and I will be not voting at all for the first time in my life this Fall.

A sad day for this blog and site. I’ve always admired you, Rick. I had no idea you supported “Her” horrific policies.
