Security Back on Ship

Each time we leave the ship, we punch out with our personal sea card. This functions as our room key, credit card for any purchases on board (the ship is essentially cash-free), and general ID. And when we return to our ship, we punch back in. They know exactly who’s on shore and who’s on board at all times. And no one comes back on board without having everything they carry run through the X-ray machine for security. After security, someone tries to get me to use a little Purell (which I avoid), and we’re back into our fantasy ship world. Here’s the security action from the point of view of my camera. (If you’ve never personally gone through an X-ray machine, you’re in for a treat.)

The cruise ship security was very impressive. It was a comfort to know that no strangers could ever get on board. How was your cruise ship security experience?

  1. Why would you avoid the hand sanitizer? I’d think with all the traveling you do, it would be one of your important pieces of equipment, or do you trust your strong immune system to protect you?

  2. The reason to avoid hand sanitizes is that they have a lot ofq alcohol and can dry out your skin. People with dry skin can find that it irritates their skin if they use it a lot.

I was surprised that they let him keepnthe camera going in security. I know it is all very straight forward, but most security companies frown on photographs.

  3. I avoid the hand sanitizers too. At security I have one hand busy carrying my key card and hat (must be removed for security) and the other carrying my purse, camera and any other bags AND they want to squirt my hands!?! Haven’t figured out how to do it all and haven’t bothered because the alcohol in hand sanitizers is not effective against the norovirus responsible for so much illness on ships. I wash my hand upon entering and leaving my cabin and only use the washroom in my cabin. I was on a ‘sick’ ship once and no amount of hand sanitizer stopped the spread of illness. (Not only does hand sanitizer contribute to dry skin, it can also affect any soft gems, such as emeralds, in your rings.)

  4. i also avoid the hand sanitizer as i don’t like the greasy feeling it leaves behind. i prefer to wash with soap and water frequently.

  5. I would think that hand sanitizer helps protect the immune suppressed passengers and the elderly and infirm from your germs.

  6. I just spent a month on a Holland America cruise visiting many of the same ports as Rick. As much as I do not care for the “feel” of hand sanitizer, I was happy to use it and hope all of my fellow travelers were doing the same. I doubt cruise lines would stress the importance of this were it not considered effective!

  7. I was on the Celebrity Equinox on the sailing right after his and there are signs everywhere that pictures are not allowed of the security area, so I suspect Rick got some special treatment here…
