Shooting David

Being a public-television film crew, we have to be creative in production. With a smooth floor and a good wheelchair, we’ve made a “poor man’s dolly” in order to get a nice swooping shot of Michelangelo’s David.

If you can’t see the video below, watch it on YouTube.

  1. I liked this. I would go to Florence in the winter. In fact, I like most of Europe in the winter.

  2. Next time ask them to put David on a turntable. It will make your job a whole lot easier. Seriously though, we`ve used this trick a lot. (I do international video production.) Almost anything on wheels works as long as you`ve got a smooth surface and marble is about as good as it gets. And regarding the comments about Firenze in winter: it`s nearly perfect. Last time I was in Piazza della Signoria in December, the only other person there was a carabinieri. Having that space all to yourself is a joy forever. And the winter food…outstanding. Wild boar season doesn`t occur in July, but in November/December you`ll find it in numerous restaurants.

  3. Rick, thanks for providing a brief look at some of the work you do in providing up-to-date and accurate information for your readers. I`ll be anxiously awaiting the new shows on Florence and other parts of Italy on KCTS. Watching the short video on your Guidebook research in Varenna makes me wish I`d be making a return visit this year. I always make a point of stopping at Barilott to have a visit with Claudia and Fabrizio (and of course an excellent Panino and one or more glasses of Vino).

  4. Fun stuff, Rick. I`m also in production, and although we often whine about lack of budget for all the latest and greatest gadgets, we also have a lot of “DIY pride” in our creative improvisations and solutions!
