I’m in the Netherlands for five days before returning next month with my film crew. I’m scouting good spots to film and good spots for various “on cameras” (like this delightful little counterbalance bridge in the storybook town of Marken). I don’t care about the relentless rain I’m traveling through–but when I’m here with our camera, I’ll be praying for sun. Ten years ago we produced one 30-minute TV show in standard definition on Amsterdam that included a side trip into the countryside. Next month we’ll produce two half-hour shows in glorious hi-def: a complete show on Amsterdam and another on the Dutch countryside. They will air (with an entire new season) this September across the USA on your local public TV station. Stay tuned!
Scouting the Netherlands in the Rain

Hope you have some good luck. I have noticed that the north and east seem to have more rain than normal. I am not happy that we are having a drought out here, but am loving the sun of summer!
Sounds like we’ll be right behind you. We don’t arrive in Amsterdam until August 6.
We were just there, completing three weeks, more or less following your Best of Europe Tour (except no Switzerland or Germany) – may be I will write a letter to that Rick Steves guy, after all!!
We were on that very bridge about three weeks ago, and I thing anywhere in that island, or in Edam would be good spots to film, especially that area in Edam along the canal immediately to the right of the bus stop, with views of the “little church” bell tower. It is also cool that the ground cover there and in the cemetery of Grote Kerk are all sea shells! That neighborhood is extremely quaint and beautiful.
hi rick, also giethoorn is a very good place to visit. it’s the Venice of Holland (many streets are of water)
