I enjoy lining up on my windowsill the books we birth and nurture. And beyond that lineup, immediately across the street from my office, is the old building where that work is done. I constantly marvel at how much beautiful work our guidebook staff does in what we call Book Haus. When we gathered for our annual group photo on the steps of Book Haus just the other day, I knew I was in the company of fine travelers, fine editors/graphic designers, and fine people who care as much as I do about our mission of inspiring and equipping our readers with the best information for the best possible trips. All of us are thankful that you travel with us. We look forward to bringing you even more information to turn your 2014 travel dreams into smooth and affordable reality. Happy New Year from the Rick Steves guidebook staff!

Sounds like fun, especially the research! I’m a writer-editor myself and work on interesting projects, but the topics don’t usually lend themselves to fantasizing at work! My husband and I have been on two RS tours and on trips to Britain, Ireland, Normandy/Paris, and Italy (10 times) using RS books and the Graffiti Wall, where we can. We’ve branched out to places Rick doesn’t cover in Umbria using techniques learned from his books! In case someone on your team goes on an extended trip and you need a sub editor, I can work weekends!
It would be fair and expected to also give credit to the people who do the research On Location enabling updates to these guidebooks.
I would like to be a fly-on-the-wall during Steves’ upcoming reunion with his contractor European guides. What will he tell them (and his local staff) about ETBD policy regarding cannabis now that Washington state and Colorado have approved “recreational” use. Will his employees now be even happier campers? Can customers expect more giggles when they call Edmonds?
After reading these most recent blogs, I am really surprised at the sarcasm that continues. We have used many of the guide books and we are amazed at how much help they really bring us. We have been all over Europe in the last 12 years, on our own and saved a lot of money and time and had a wonderful time. I have been planning a trip to England and asked a couple questions on the help line and out of six answers so far I have gotten one person who has not been rude and sarcastic about my question, even arguing over whether May is Spring or Summer. I have never had this happen before. In the past people have been so helpful. England is one area we have never been and the planning is a bit more complicated for us. Europe through the Back Door is a the best resource out there.
