St. Petersburg Metro — Take a People-Watching Ride on a Long Escalator

The striking thing about St. Petersburg’s amazing subway system (like Moscow’s) is that it is extremely deep. It was dug by nearly free peasant labor in the 1930s and — after a break for World War II — finished in the 1950s. While London’s impressive system feels rickety, St. Petersburg’s feels industrial-strength and bomb-hardened. Getting around by metro is second nature for locals. Today millions of citizens who use the system spend a good part of their lives — about an hour a week — riding escalators like this.

  1. I was also impressed with the cleanliness of the metro system. and if you are afraid of heights- you look straight ahead while going down- don’t look down- it is a LONNNGG way, as your video showed. Fun watching people with you! Happy Travels!

  2. Lovers can kiss on the escalators as long as they’re straight. Gays better stick to knitting or book reading. Russia will get none of my tourist dollars as long as they insist upon living in the dark ages. I understand places like Africa, the Middle East and Mississippi where deep seated hatred draws its roots from ignorance and religion. Russia knows better.

  3. I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned one of the unique safety features of the metro- the manner in which you enter the train via elevator-style doors on the platform.

  4. There is one section like this in New York’s system, and it freaks me out every time. It is slow going back up and you feel like you will never get there. The other thing is how much cleaner Russia’s subways are and how dirty New York’s are!

  5. What do you mean, London’s system feels rickety? Feels fine to me. Certainly a lot nicer than New York’s!

  6. Hi,

I feel as if I’m right there with you as you have traveled thru Russia and Scandinavia.

Thanks so much for posting you videos so we can see what it’s like over there. I hope the new book will also be a hit.

I just read that Trish is also Norwegian. Uff Da.

  7. Rick time to get your office to start monitoring the blog. You have some really weird entries happening not to mention this is just turning into a gossip blog not a travel blog. Wishing these people would book a trip and travel (Wow what an idea, a travel blog). Getting uncomfortable for those who are looking for valuable information.

  8. Judy, Judy, Judy. This “IS” a travel blog and those who have traveled for many years taking guidance from Rick by way of his guide books and video presentations have been exposed to not only Rick but his family. Sometimes people are just curious about what Rick has presented to his audience over the years. If Rick were to start decrying the evils of marijuana use, would it be ok for people to ask why, what happened?

Don’t be so petty. Rick is a seasoned world traveler. I am sure he can handle the comments.
