Trish and I went through the formalities on our ship so we could leave it in St. Petersburg, before the cruise ended in Copenhagen. We then caught a taxi at the terminal (fixed price, paid in advance at a booth in the terminal, at probably double the metered rate — but at $30 for a 30-minute ride, I was satisfied), and went to my friend’s apartment. Here are various images, experiences, and tips I’d like to share from our time in St. Petersburg.

Thank you for your insight into St. Petersburg. I have been on several cruises that included St. Petersburg and have always taken the ship shore excursions, which were sometimes a waste of time due to the congested street traffic on weekdays in the city. The next time I cruise to St Petersburg, I will get your book, a visa in advance and try the subways.
Thanks again.
I am also a fan of river cruising in Europe; how about putting together a book designed for European river ports of call?
From my experience and those of others in the chorus with whom I sang in St Petersburg a few years ago, I’ll confirm that purse snatching, pickpocketing, purse slashing, police shakedowns, and the like, are common.
Hope you tell us why would any one choose to live here? Of all the places to leave the US for. There is a certain irony to this city.
Hi,
Thanks for letting us know what St. Petersburg is all about. That was interesting.
The photos of the subway system are beautiful. The New York City transit authority should take note.

OMG! As far as Rick Steves private life goes, in the immortal words of William Shatner,”Get a life, people!” ;>
One year ago I had the opportunity to visit The Prado Museo, in Madrid. In that ocassion, a temporal exhibition of the St. Petersburg museum- The Hermitage- was presented with excellent works of art, sculptures, paintings and precious jewlery from the faberge house. I believe that a visit to The Hermitage is a must, if one has the ocassion of visiting St. Petersburg and appreciate the works of art of Tiziano, Bernini, Caravaggio – – – – and that this experience is narrated “In Live” for one of the most important travel expert like R.Steves. J.J trezz Monterrey, Mexico.
We had a great, great walking tour a few years ago that took us from the meeting point at a hostel all around the key areas — out toward Smolny Convent and back through the Summer Garden and to the Church on Spilled Blood at the end. Terrific Masters’ student guide. Charming and eager to show off her town. Run by Peterswalks.
