Rick Toasts Kid Travelers

We took our kids out of school every May for many years, and I always considered it good parenting, great education, and a bonus for the adult tour members to have kids as part of the group. Having Annaleise and Brogan on this tour was, for me, particularly fun. It reminded me of the joy of a parent who is introducing a child to the broader world (and the wide-eyed wonder I traveled with on my first schoolboy trip in 1969). Annaleise and Brogan were great travelers, and it just seemed right to raise a glass to our youngest travel partners (FYI–this video starts in the middle of my toast).

  1. They are so cute! We are hoping to share our joy of travel with our grand kids when they get a bit older, only 5 and 7 right now! Wish that we were in a financial position when our own kids young to do that with them. We stayed in the US and they had wonderful time!

  2. We took our daughter (then 5) out of school to take her with us on a vacation to Germany, Italy and France. We felt that it taught her about geography, architecture, art, different cultures, different food, language studies and much more. And yes, even at 5, you can teach kids a lot and they will absorb it. Our daughter loved climbing to the top of Brunelleschi’s dome and to the top of the Eiffel Tower. She also loved making friends with other kids and it was so much fun seeing them communicating with each other even if they didn’t speak the same language.

My husband and I feel that travel is such a big part of our lives and we couldn’t imagine traveling without our daughter. We often talk about how we enjoy a trip in three phases: the planning, the trip itself and then the memories. We are currently in that first phase of planning for our next trip to Europe and we can’t wait to experience the next two phases with our daughter!
