Frederiksborg Castle, in the town of Hillerød near Copenhagen, is the top castle in Scandinavia by far, and a great example of how Scandinavian sights are really well-presented. Whenever possible, use the included audio tours. (By the way, in the clip, I accidentally call this place “Christiansborg.” Frankly, I’m overwhelmed by the many kings that are the cleats upon which you tie down an understanding of Danish history — and I sometimes get my borgs mixed up. While Denmark does have a Christiansborg, this one is named for a Frederik, not a Christian.)

For a “mind blowing” day visit Frederiksborg Castle (I agree, the best castle in Scandinavia), then go by train to Elsinore Castle (also worth a trip)in Helsingor, then head down by train to the Lousiana Museum – open until 10pm some days – in(Humlebaek). All of this can easily be done by train from Copenhagen……have done this many times with friends. Well worth the time!
It is one of my favorite castles – fascinating and beautiful. Don’t miss it!
We are traveling to Denmark in September and looking for sites to visit and any other helpful information. Thanks for the tips!! I am wondering if you stayed at any of the bed and breakfast places. There seem to be quite a few of them around Denmark.
“Elsinore Castle” is called Kronborg in Denmark, the home of Hamlet and where Holger Danske hibernates.
To Rene-
Holger Danske now ‘hibernates’ in Skjern. He was purchased by a local real estate Company and has a Foundation established for his continued well-being. FYI Skjern is located in the most scenic part of Denmark – West Jutland – where the bird watching, fishing and beaches are amazing!
