Foreign Language Study Is a Great Tool for Connecting with Europe

On November 20 in San Diego, I’ll be giving one of the most exciting talks in my life: a keynote address to thousands of foreign language teachers at the annual convention of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). I’m a huge believer in the importance of connecting with locals while you’re on the road. And there’s no better tool for that than a proficiency in the language of the place you’re visiting. Here’s an interview I did with The Language Educator magazine, which gives my take on the value of learning foreign languages.

  1. Thank you, Rick, for being an ambassador of good will connecting peoples of many nations!!

  2. Rick, I so agree. For our first big trip to Italy, I studied Italian in evening classes for 18 months. It opened so many doors and opportunities with Italian people for us, and I felt so much more relaxed. Of course, “piu lentemente, per favore” was the phrase I used daily, but we were able to talk about the economy, politics, families…have real connections! Last year, for a shorter trip to France, I wasn’t quite so gung-ho , but studied for a shorter time and with that and school French (being Canadian) I managed very well and again found everyone so friendly and helpful once I spoke in French (with apologies, as they are very proud of proper French!) As a side benefit, they say it is very helpful for an aging brain:)

  3. Hi Rick are we going to be seeing some blogging about your travels in the Hawaiian Islands, or have you ever been to Hawaii? Just wondering…..

  4. Rick, speaking foreign languages provides a more in depth experience while travelling. It adds an invaluable dimension which makes learning most worthwhile. I am looking forward to meeting you on January 23rd at Josephinum.
