I’ve been riding Europe’s rails since I was a kid. And to this day, a long, fast train trip gives me a youthful thrill. I marvel at how Europe’s trains just keep getting better, faster, and more comfortable.
Having completed the Germany guidebook research stretch of my trip, I’m heading for Amsterdam to meet the film crew. I’m spending seven hours on one of Germany’s superfast ICE (InterCity Express) trains, writing and enjoying every moment — because for me, there’s very little that’s better than stretching out in a first-class quiet car, blitzing through Germany, while massaging my gangly notes into smooth and tight new writing for the upcoming 2015 edition of Rick Steves’ Germany guidebook.

Anyone else refuse to drink Starbucks while in Europe? I would feel so guilty traveling all that way…and drinking something you could get pretty much anywhere in America. For me, American companies are off limits while I’m overseas. You just made me a little sad Rick :). Ok im over it now.
Sometimes a Starbucks is perfect while in Europe. A little taste of home and then back into a European state of mind.
Dude – don’t take off your glasses! It’s like seeing a Kabuki dancer without their makeup :-)
I’ve often noted that 1st class is best suited for business travelers on expense accounts who need to work en-route. Looks to be well illustrated in this example.
It is my goal to finally see Germany in 2015. Been to other countries–France, The Netherlands, England, Turkey, Hungary, Spain…never Deutschland. (Stopovers in Frankfurt don’t count) Want to be in Berlin on 3 October, and that should be an event. That clip really has me psyched. You rock Rick!!
