Merry Xmas

We all treasure our Christmases at home. But I treasure my Christmases abroad, too. I’d love to hear your favorite memories about being in a country that celebrates Christmas with a different twist that you enjoyed.

By the way, “Xmas” is OK. While some believe that “Xmas” takes the “Christ” out of “Christmas,” it’s actually not the case at all. X was the ancient Greek abbreviation for the word “Christ.” The word for “Christ” in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using X, the first initial of Christ’s name, as shorthand for the word “Christ” in “Christmas.” Although the early Christians understood this shorthand, later Christians mistook “Xmas” as a sign of disrespect. So, if you’d like to refer to Christmas as Xmas, you’ll only offend people who don’t know their history.

  1. Being in California, USA, I always get to enjoy a warm climate; even in Christmas. My Xmas started back when I was visiting Disneyland; just as the holidays were swinging in. (They still do it, today.) I got a chance to chat with the Characters, who were dressed for the occasion. Even today, with the new Fantasyland expansion; at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World, it’s no surprise that everyone wants to be home for the holiday.

  2. I spent Christmas 2009 in Preston England with family for my first visit for 3 weeks. It snowed and the countryside was very scenic. We visited Warwick Castle, London, Wales, Oxford, castles, good food, it was the best. It was unforgettable.

  3. I remember visiting family in the Czech Republic and all over Prague people were carrying their Xmas trees on the subway and the trams. I also got quite a surprise on Xmas Eve when I saw the carp for evening meal swimming around in the bathtub! Czech Xmas is much more about family and the true meaning of Xmas; even in Prague the decorations didn’t go up until about a week before Xmas (this was over 10 years ago; maybe it’s changed).

  4. I have spent one Christmas in Europe a couple years ago. We spent Christmas in Paris and it was just so great celebrating in another culture. Wonderful experience!

  5. I’m in Vegas right now, maybe the only American here on Xmas. Would rather be in Europe but having some pretty good meals here imitating my experiences in Italy, France, etc.

  6. We are celebrating our fourth Christmas in Italy, this time in the fabulous village of Ortisei. We are the only Americans in a polyglot of French, Germans, and Italians. Such fun to hear the different greetings! Many many presepi on display, and a lively atmosphere despite the lack of snow.
