Red Wine and Cheese: Working in Orvieto

A favorite research chore for me in Orvieto is checking my restaurants…and then trying to find even better ones. (Actually, I guess that’s a favorite research chore almost anywhere I go. Hey, it’s a job.) I appreciate what I call “personality-driven restaurants,” where the owner is forever enthusiastic about sharing his love of good cooking. Here at Ristorante La Palomba, when Gianpiero learned my favorite dessert was good cheese with red wine, he made sure I understood what he was serving and that I left with a lifelong memory.

  1. I alerted Rick Steve’s tour sales manager, the highly effective and responsive Deanna Woodruff, that Rick is ubiquitous (that’s one word for: like rover, he’s all over).

In the very good film “At Any Price” starrring Dennis Quaid, Zac Efron, Kim Dickson, there is a scene in which Quaid’s character’s spouse, Kim Dickson, is watching a tv travel program. It takes place halfway or more thru the film and as the emotions simmer, in the background is the voice of Rick Steves talking about the merits of Paris. It’s only 3 or 4 seconds but it shows how iconic (aarrgh) some travel gurus have become. Rick is not mentioned by name but he has a distinctive voice.

  2. We loved Orvieto. It is such a sweet little town to bang around for a couple of days. We are taking some friends through Italy next April and Orvieto is going to be one of our stops. We were just talking about it the other day!

  3. Rick, this is great! I’m afraid, though, that I can’t quite make out the names of the cheeses. Any chance we could get those names posted? I’d like to see if any of these can be found at my local cheesemonger!

  4. I also live Orvieto. I remember taking the funicular up to Orvieto and then walked into the center of the town where the Cathedral is, but realized later could have taken a free bus to the center as part of the fee of the funicular. Oh, well you live and learn (it might have changed now), but this is was in 2011. I also had ice cream at the Gelateria Pasqualetti. Also took some wonderful photos of the valley and the Roman ruins. The Cathedral itself is also one of the most beautiful in the area. I only had ice cream on my visit so do not know anything about the Ristoranti La Polomba. Can’t wait to see Orvieto again.
