A Speedy Cruise-Ship Orientation

On a cruise, after a couple days on the ship, you get the lay of the land. It’s good to give yourself a tour of each deck early on, to find the special places and find out about your various activities, eating, and drinking options. Here’s a quick look at how my cruise ship (Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas) was laid out.

If you can’t see the video below, watch it on YouTube.

  1. While Rick was on a larger ship than we prefer, there is nothing quite like returning to the ship after a full day touring, and relaxing in the hot tub (as some people were doing in the video). Looking forward to your reports from Celebrity!

  2. We felt that if we are going to be on a ship the bigger the better. You don’t seem to run into the same things all the time. The theaters are bigger and don’t even know you are on a cruise ship. Also you don’t have to pay for a Suite to get a fairly big room. My husband and were just talking about this last night. We were saying that we would surely not do this for every vacation, because we love the adventure of travel on our own. But when you have had a hard year or have a big family it is a good thing. Last year my mother in law in her late 70’s went to Norway with her two daughters, and for the three of them with their mother who has health problems it was a very fun memoriable trip.

  3. Seems to me Rick is having fun in spite of himself. I am taking my first cruise in November in Europe and I too have my doubts. We are doing a lot of travel before and after the cruise but these videos are making me feel a little less apprehensive of the cruise. Thanks Rick.

  4. Ugh. And ugly. Reminds me of convention hotels. On the other hand being on a bus with 30 others is no great experience either.

  5. Traveling is so much about attitude. Cruises are fun. Traveling independently is fun. You can gain experiences and memories traveling both ways, as long as you go into it with the right attitude. I’m looking forward to more posts!

  6. I’m with those who are finding themselves surprised by the blog. I thought that the cruising would be horrible. And, while it’s not my cup of tea, if it was how I could do a trip with my mom who is in her 80’s I’ve decided that I could get into the spirit of it. I think that it was Rick is discovering. He advocates traveling with an open mind and it’s fun to see him open his mind to cruise ships.

  7. Huh???? “We love the adventure of travel on our own” from the same person who blogged that she was intimidated by Naples and just walked around an hour not knowing what to do? Any well-seasoned traveler would see that Naples, home of creche art, the finest archaeological museum in Europe, a city known for the existence of no class warfare, and a city renowned for its vitality, energy and uniqueness is much more then just a city with garbage and “gritty” people.

  8. This is great! I am actually going on this exact cruise and ship in less than two weeks! I have been on its sister ship Navigator, and she was grand! My friend are taking this tour as she has never been to Europe and has a limited vacation and financial budget! As Rick states, you can get on board cheap, but they are many many means to spend once there! We actually planned all our excursions with private companies, as we are subject to time restrictions, and RCI’s are pricey and the big bus you don’t want to be caught dead on in Europe! For those who don’t like the idea of all those people and being on a “cruise” ship, you don”t see half the people most the time, and you don’t get the feel of a “ship” either! RCI staff are amazing, very comparable to Disney staff friendliness and courtesy! Love them!

  9. You will have alot of friends. To begin with your going with your fsenidsro it should be fun regardless.Tanning on the deck, watching movies, dancing, getting dressed up or wutever its alot of fun with friends.Plus spring break is when all teens and college students take a cruise so you can meet some people.Bring a few different swimsuits, alot of shorts and tees, and also formal clothing. U can choose to eat dinner at the fancy resteraunt they have onboard and you need to dress up for that. I have seen some people where prom dresses and stuff but personally i say you go for a cocktail dress or something like that. oh and some clubbing clothes just in case.If i were u i wud back off the alcohol cuz alot of crazy stuff has happened to ppl that were drunk no joke. When you get off the ship at ur different destinationsmake sure that where ur gonna go is safe.Personally i dont like the whole touristy part of the citycuz im fun and adventerousbut some places are really dangerous and u get mugged among other things..Dont worry..you’ll have fun!
