Traveling the USA — and Enjoying In-Depth Interviews with the Local Media

While I’ve never tallied it up, I imagine I spend 30 or 40 days a year traveling throughout the USA, visiting public television stations and giving lectures. When I’m in town to give a talk or host a pledge drive, I often sit down with the local affairs show host for an interview. I think the best interviewer I’ve encountered was Dick Pryor last year at OETA in Oklahoma City. Here’s that interview on OETA’s local affairs program, On The Record.

  1. I know people will think I am a Rick Steves Pollyanna, but seriously if we had not bought that first Italy guidebook and taken off with four adventurous friends years ago I would never have traveled almost every year to Europe for over a decade. This was something we always dreamed about but did not know how to go about it. It never gets old, as the world changes RS changes with it. Thank full that Rick is our age because I don’t think I could do it in a VW van at our age. Glad he has stepped it up from the old days!

  2. Thanks Rick. I hope that more and more people are influenced by your shows on Radio and Tv and your books to travel and find their own backdoor.

  3. I am proud that Oklahoma has a Public TV network, not just a station. The network unites the state and provides the state with quality programming . Dick Pryor’s interview was very well done, and displayed Rick S. Journalism.
